Why "Just Try Harder" Doesn't Work for Neurodivergent Kids 

I spent time in San Diego schools before I became licensed, and I lost count of how many times I watched a teacher — a kind one, genuinely trying to help — tell a kid to try harder. Sit still. Focus. Just remember this time. The kid usually wanted to. That was the part that got missed.

The mistake buried in "try harder"

"Try harder" assumes the problem is effort or willingness. For a lot of neurodivergent kids, that's not where the problem actually lives.

Dr. Russell Barkley, one of the most cited researchers in ADHD, has spent decades arguing that ADHD is best understood as a disorder of executive function and self-regulation — not knowledge, and not motivation. His research reframes ADHD less as "not knowing what to do" and more as "not doing what one knows." A kid with ADHD frequently knows exactly what they're supposed to do. The gap is between knowing it and actually doing it in the moment it matters — what Barkley calls the point of performance.

That gap isn't a character flaw. It's a difference in how the brain manages time, working memory, emotional regulation, and follow-through. Research estimates that roughly 60 to 70% of children with ADHD continue to experience meaningful symptoms into adulthood, and executive function differences are considered a core, persistent feature of the condition rather than something a kid simply grows out of with enough discipline.

What "try harder" actually does

Tell a kid enough times that the solution is more effort, and here's what tends to happen instead: they try, they fail anyway, and they draw the only conclusion available to them — that something is wrong with them personally, not with the strategy being used. That belief tends to outlast the specific incident by years. I see it constantly in the teenagers and adults I work with, long after anyone stopped saying "try harder" out loud.

The cruelest part is that neurodivergent kids are often trying the hardest of anyone in the room. They're just spending that effort somewhere invisible — managing sensory input, masking a stim, translating an instruction that didn't land the way it was meant to — and none of that shows up as visible "effort" to an adult watching from outside.

What actually helps

None of this means neurodivergent kids don't need structure, expectations, or skill-building. They need all of it — just aimed at the right target.

- Externalize what the brain can't hold internally. Visual schedules, timers, written steps instead of spoken ones — not as training wheels to eventually remove, but as legitimate long-term tools, the same way glasses are a legitimate long-term tool for someone who's nearsighted.

- Build the skill in the calm moment, not the crisis moment. A kid mid-meltdown has essentially no access to the executive function you're trying to teach. Skill-building happens before or after, not during.

- Change the environment, not just the kid. Sometimes the actual intervention is shortening the task, changing the time of day, or removing a sensory trigger — not another conversation about effort.

- Separate the behavior from the identity. "That didn't work, let's find something that does" lands very differently than "you're not trying." One is about a strategy. The other becomes a belief about who they are.

The version I'd want a parent to hold onto

Your kid is very likely not choosing this. The brain that struggles to sit still at 3pm is often the same brain doing enormous, invisible work all day to hold it together. "Try harder" asks for more of a resource that may already be running on empty. The better question isn't how to get more effort out of a neurodivergent kid — it's how to build a life around them that doesn't require quite so much of it just to get through an ordinary day.
